This summer, Norauto France and the Motorway Companies are taking action to combat falling asleep behind the wheel

12 July 2010

On the motorways, drowsiness is the number one factor leading to accidents. Norauto and the ASFA (Association des Sociétés Françaises d’Autoroutes – Association of French Motorway Companies) are joining forces to warn motorists about the dangers of falling asleep at the wheel and providing simple and effective advice as holiday makers make their way to their destinations.

Awareness of the risks associated with drowsiness when driving, the factors that are liable to increase those risks, noticing the warning signals, making the most of stops to take a break… This is the kind of information that Norauto and the Motorway Companies are planning to communicate to as many motorists as possible throughout the summer.

A road safety campaign that is focusing on the following 3 areas:

A poster campaign in all 230 Norauto centres is to be deployed, with a list of the main warning signals and suggested solutions on how to combat drowsiness when driving;

140,000 leisure CDs with 15 minutes of relaxing music to help the motorist feel refreshed and ready to go, will be distributed in the Norauto centres from 19th July*;

A road safety message encouraging motorists to take a break as soon as they detect the first signs of drowsiness will be regularly broadcast on the 107.7 FM motorways radio during the summer.

Some figures on drowsiness at the wheel

– Drowsiness is a factor in 1 out of every 3 motorway accidents.
– Over half of all accidents, where drowsiness was a factor, put other people at risk (motorists, teams of the motorway companies).
– 1.5 million motorists affected by drowsiness put the lives of people in danger every year.$
